Cultural Oppression in 900 Popular Films from 2007-2016
A massive USC study of representation in popular movies from 2007-2016 found that marginalized communities were largely left off screen or had limited and/or stereotypical presentation. Of the top 100 films in 2016, 54 films had no speaking Latinx characters, 44 films had no speaking Asian characters, and 24 had no speaking African American characters. This lack of representation also affected other marginalized communities. 74 of the top 100 film of 2016 had no LGB characters. Only 3 of the 100 top films of 2016 had WOC as leads or co-leads. Hollywood has a long way to go before reaching representational equity.
